Default Ran Out of Fuel - Car Won't Start

Posting for a friend with a TDI Jetta - he ran his car out of fuel accidentally. Now it won't start. What's the procedure to get it running again? He tried pouring fuel into the fuel filter canister to no avail.

Thanks in advance!!!

And tell your friend not to do it again, it's hard on the injection pump.

Kirk -

Read this thread over on Fred's TDI Club forums. Read all the way through it before you give your friend an answer.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think he ended up getting the car towed to the dealer. Expensive lesson learned.

Expensive indeed at a VW stealer. Hope they don't try to sell him a new injection pump...I have heard of it happening a time or two.

That car should never go to a stealership shop again.

Would retrofitting a lift pump prevent this? I wonder if it'd be cheaper than the tow & stealership work...

Make that 2 or 3. Mine was replaced by the dealership after I got really low. (Not empty, mind you, but really REALLY close. The engine stumbled once and I shut if off). Luckily, I was still under my aftermarket warranty. 1800 bucks I didn't have to pay.
