Default TDI with 129k, Must do items?

I'm looking to buy a 2004 TDI with 129k miles on it. Can't get confirmation of timing belt being done. What other critical items to look at with this odo reading?

mine just rolled 123K so here's what I've done so far.

Timing belt and water pump (obvious) If they don't have records and can't produce them, assume it hasn't been done and get it done!
front wheel bearings (depends on the car, may or may not be an issue)
Cleaned turbo and intake (again depends on the car)
brakes
rotors
nothing else really. Maybe someone else will chime in and see what else you need done.

A 2004 TDI is going to have all the same body and electrical issues/concerns as any other NB/A4 car of this vintage. The 2004 TDI engine is prone to a few more issues, which I will touch on below. If I was in the market right now, I would personally be looking at the 2003 or older TDI's, as they do not have some of the issues that the 2004+ models have with valvetrain wear.

5 speed or DSG? If 5 speed, beware of DMF failure issues...they seem to crop up around that age/mileage. A fairly easy fix in this case, just replace it with a SMF clutch setup. DSG...also beware of DMF issues, only difference is you are still stuck with replacing it with a DMF. DSG transmissions require fluid/filter changes every 40k, no exceptions.

2004+ models also have the infamous cam/lifter wear issues. The valve cover should be removed and the cam/lifters should be inspected for abnormal wear. Replacement cost is about $2000 or so.

Glow plugs. VW has a recall on these now I believe. VW fitted these engines with ceramic glow plugs. After awhile, these tend to break off and cause engine damage. They are now being replaced with steel glow plugs, the ECU must also be flashed to correct the voltages.

Timing belt will have to be done if there is no history on it. Better safe than sorry. Interval for these is 100k miles. If this was has not been done it is on borrowed time. All components in the path of the belt must be replaced; water pump, tensioner, idler roller in addition to the stretch bolts a such. Here is an excellent example of a quality kit: http://www.dieselgeek.com/servlet/Detail?no=368

Now for the good news. You are in a good area for TDI mechanics. Take a look here: Trusted TDI Mechanics - Google Maps

Get in contact with and network with these gentlemen and others in your area. They are a great resource to have and they might be able to give you a hand with pre-purchase inspection to ensure you get the right car for the right price. They can also take care of you for all your service needs for a very fair price and you will be able to sleep well at night knowing the job was done right. VW stealers should be avoided at all costs and never be allowed to even touch your vehicle.

Good luck and happy hunting.

FYI DZLBug, I do have experience with timing belts on the PDs. the glow plug change I can physically do, but the dealership is the best option for the reflash, unless you are interested in a chiptune and can be in Marysville, on November 14th at Jon Hamiltons place...

Good to know!

I didn't know how much work you had done on the PD's yet. How do you feel about cam/lifter replacements on them when needed?

Timing belt iks a must (just did mine at 115k) and a decarb. Check to see if coolant and brake lines have been flushed / replaced in the last 2 years. Also, there is a recall on the glow plugs. Not a biggie.
