Power loss on hills
A friend of mine has a 98 NB TDI. She claims that it has been losing power on hills, but not CEL.
Sounds sort of like the MAF. However, she said there was an audible chirping sound when it was losing power and no flashing dash lights. Anyone experienced this? .......... One thought I had was possible fuel starvation due to low fuel and the Chirping was the low fuel signal. But, as I stated above, no lights on and no CEL.

This happens in my old '84 TD! But...it also only has 68hp
 Not sure. When did this start? How many miles on the car?

Power loss
The NB TDI in reference has 169k miles on it. It's my understanding the lady was driving along about 70 mph on an upgrade when it began to lose power. She said there was an audible chirping sound as it was losing power.
I ask about dash lights, etc. She said no lights came and the CEL is not on. I'm going out to test drive this afternoon. Maybe I'll learn more!

I don't know about the chirping sound, maybe the IP gets noisy with fuel starvation?
Power loss on hills is a classic dirty fuel filter symptom.

Overdue update
This Thread was started during a rough time in my life (fall of 2009). Mostly likely I typed it on my LapTop in the wee hours of the night using the Hospital guest WIFI. At that time, both my mother-in-law and oldest brother-in-law were battling cancer. We were there helping them to the end.
Okay, as it turned out, the Vanes in the Turbo were sticky resulting in low boost when it was needed the most. The Chirping sound just happened to be coincidentally happening at about the same time due to a faulty fuel level sensor in the fuel tank. On hills with low fuel, it would Chirp On and Off. Both issues resolved and the little Bug is still running fine!
