We just bought a 2002 beetle diesel4speed automatic, the transmission had been replaced with a rebuilt from aamco transmission. It sometimes seems to start out in maybe 2nd and then won't go into 4th or drive. Is there any computer up grade or what could be the problem?I stopped the other day and shut off for a minute, then it worked OK.I need help!I had it put on the machine today . Code said no connection to speed sensor!Parts house said there are two different ones! One in front or one in back of motor. What do I look for? Thanks,Rick

Unfortunately I do not have any good news for you. These automatics (particularly paired with the TDI) are not good units at all. Rebuilds, even when done by a competent shop (which AAMCO chain shops are not), simply do not last.
The only viable options for these transmissions are replacement with a VW unit, which costs $4800 or so just for the transmission, or swapping it out for a 5 speed. 5 speed swaps usually run $1000 to $1500 parts and $1500 labor. I got lucky and got my parts for $600, but I spent another $600 on a beefier clutch to allow for engine mods. I will be doing all the work myself, so I will only be into it for about $1200. You could get it scanned for codes with VCDS (generic OBD scanners do not work well) and see if anything has been noted by the ECU. What you describe sounds like limp mode, which could be caused by a speed sensor fault. If that is the case, you may be able to keep it going for awhile. But it could be something far more serious. Just consider yourself warned that you may be in for some more serious repairs in the near future. Don't feel bad, you're not the only one. I have been afflicted with this transmission as well...it is going away very soon. Its a shame really, because the rest of the car and the engine is really great.

I'm not 100% on this but the one under the battery is for vehicle speed (G68) and one in back is for transmission vehicle speed (G38). I'm getting that from my Bentley manual. If you are on TDIClub, email CoolAirVW. He's an expert and the only guy that won't tell you to swap in a 5 speed manual. I should know. My 02 TDI Beetle also has automatic problems but I won't be putting in another automatic.
