Default Trashed Oil Pan- Something Inside Broke too- What Is it? 2001 Tdi

Posting this for Kgirl-
We have an '01 Tdi, recently rolled. The car drove fine onto trailer afterwards, but when we brought it back to our house a week later to begin parting out.. long story. Basically, very steep and angled driveway, so couldn't get trailer lined up, one beetle tire got stuck between the trailer's double tires and a floorjack got involved to tip it back toward the trailer bed. Well, the car slipped sideways and the jack pad punched a 4 by 6 inch hole in the oil pan. The engine was shut off immediately, so no damage from that. We need to put on another oil pan to get it up the driveway into the backyard (50 feet of very steep driveway and tight turn).

I looked into the gaping hole and found this broken plastic part (see pic). What is it and will it need to be replaced before putting a new oil pan on, filling with oil and driving into the backyard? Also, there is a button-shaped metal unit (pump? 3 inch diameter or so) that has a dent in it- couldn't get a good photo. We are going to use the engine in another car, but right now, we just need it out of sight of neighbors. It is still on a slope, so lousy spot to do any major surgery... What do we need to fix to avoid internal injuries for the short run up the hill?

The plastic part is a baffle. It needs to be there but probably is not crucial for a short distance like you are talking. My concern though would be for the other part you mentioned, which is the oil pickup tube. Any damage to this could result in oil starvation.

Both of these parts are very easy to replace once the pan is off, only 2 bolts for the oil pickup and 3-4 for the baffle. If you have the parts on hand, you can install them in 5 minutes before putting the pan on. Both parts are readily available from either your VW dealer or most TDI vendors. Make sure you also get the o-ring seal for the pickup tube. It really will be worth your while when you are already underneath there to replace the pan.

My advice, fix it right and you won't have to worry about it anymore. Either that or find a way to push/pull/drag it up the hill to where it needs to be.
