I have stock size tires and wheels, but when I switched to winter tires last fall, I picked a high silica/low rolling resistance tire and gained about 2 mpg.

Now I have to wonder if I should switch back to my old tires for summer. I suppose I should, to check the mileage difference.

I have a 2000 TDI automatic with only 141000 on her. Bought her new and have ran my Amsoil 5w-40 and get an average of 41-43 mpg. 38 mpg around town with all of the stop and go traffic. But I did get 45 during a trip to the Grand Canyon and Disneyland from Missouri crusing with the a/c on and going on an average of 65 mpg cross country. I run bio diesel as much as I can. The only problems seem to have been the window registers, some headlight burn outs ($5) at Wally world with a 10 minute change time and the MAF(recalled back when)and the recall for the brakelight -that worked fine prior to the dealer fix and still works. Speed does drop the fuel milage down...heavy foot--low milage, more fuel usage, more tickets, etc.

^ Similar experience in a similar car. 2000 TDI with 209,000km (or 130,000 miles) and automatic transmission. I've only had the car for a week but so far I averaged a less-than-stellar 7.0L / 100km (34 mpg) on that one tank. Granted, it was all stop-and-go traffic and the last week was blistering hot & humid so the air conditioner was on non-stop.

Looking forward to the new full tank of fuel and seeing how many miles I can stretch it this time around!
