Speedometer and Odometer not working

Hello. I recently bought a 5 speed manual 2000 New Beetle TDI and except for a few minor things I have to fix, it has been working great until now.

A couple days ago, it felt I like ran over a piece of wood on the road and ever since that time my speedometer and odometer stopped working. The fuel gauge goes up and slowly bounces around at times when I am accelerating and slowing down. Also, I hear a whining noise sometimes on acceleration either on 2nd or 3rd gear.

I searched the forum for speedometer problems and found some information, but I do not have enough information to fully diagnose the problem. I found enough information to determine that I have 3 sensors and a pinon gear that goes into the transmission and I believe the pinon may be broken, but don't know where to find it.

I bought the Bentley maintenance manual and was able to locate the VSS and pulled it out. check it, replace the electronic portion and still not working.

The Bentley manual does show the insides of the manual transmission, so I don't know how the VSS is connected inside to know what's broken.

Are the better service manuals out there? Anyone ever encountered this problem? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
