Default Hidden Coolant Temp Sensor

Based on the code, I need to replace the coolant temp sensor on my 02 beetle TDI. The dealer told me it was in the return radiator hose. The Bentley service manual shows it is in the return radiator hose. Guess what? It isn't there. The car was built in January of 02. Any ideas where it might be located?

only a guess, but I would check the return radiator hose.

actually, iirc on an ALH it is located very near or behind the coolant glowplugs.

they are located to the right of the engine and are in a triangle pattern with 3 wires going to the hose.

You are asking about the temp sensor that has the green top, or a different sensor?
If you look at the above photo, see the green screw top for the power steering tank? It should be located just to the left of there.
Are you by chance looking at the lower hose and not the upper radiator hose?

Default I think I found it.

I called the dealer and asked him to pull the shop manual for an 03 bug TDI. Wouldn't you know it, VW moved it on the 03's. So VW must have done a mid year change on the 02s. It is now located on the back side of the thermostat housing. You can't see it, and you can barely feel it when you reach your hand around the coolant preheater hose. It feels like it has a spring loaded clip that might be holding it in. Since I can't see the clip, I can't tell if I should pull up or push down on the clip to get the sensor out. Any suggestions?
