Default Is this normal for a TDi PD???

Is it normal for the TDi PD to sound a bit 'tappety' when its cold at around 2000 rpm, it only lasts for a minute or so and doesn't sound tappety at idle or higher than these revs, is this normal?

No idea on that engine Luke but any hydraulic tappet engine is prone to that noise if a lifter is weak - I guess you are just attracting them at the moment

Thing is I'm not sure if its just a Diesel noise, or a tappet noise, the problem with the PDi engine is the cams/lifters can wear causing catastrophic effects to the engine which obviously I dont want to happen.

And as its under warranty I'dlike to get i sorted (if it IS a problem) before the warranty runs out and I have to fix it myself and spend my money on it

Have you checked your oil levels? I know you can get some more noise when you are low on oil.

get yourself a 5mm allen socket, and a 10mm deep socket and pull your valve cover. look for sharp edges on cam lobes, and or discoloration on the cam lobes.

if in doubt, post photos and I can let you know.

if you are under warranty, they dealership will want to know what oil you have been using how often. and they will want receipts for proof.

otherwise, prepaire for the pain if you find cam wear.

parts for this motor plus a timing belt kit are about $1000 from boraparts.

where are you located?

I'm in the UK

Oils fine, not sure whats in it as I've just bought it, the car is a 2002 PD (we had the PD from 02 in the UK )

The noise disappears as soon as the blue light goes out and the only way I can describe it is the engine sounds tappier at between 2-2.5k.

I'll pull the rocker cover and have a look. Do I need to get a new rocker gasket or will the old one reseal ok?

Performance wise the car is spot on, I get 45-50mpg no probs and the engine doesn't smoke or use oil.

on the us spec PDs the valve cover gasket is reuseable. unless it is a separate piece on the euro spec ones (unlikely) its reuseable.
