Default cold start valve

I have a 2002 beetle with a 1.9 TDI. It has 136000 miles. I get a CEL and according to autoxray the code is 1248. Haynes manual say fuel control malfunction and online it says "cold start valve". Everything I check electrically per the Haynes manual indicates normal. all the wiring looks to be intact. The CEL is not on when the car is started but comes on shortly after its running. I don't notice any loss of power or fuel economy. I drive 50 miles one way to work and I'd like to fix what ever is wrong before it catstophically fails. Any ideas?

First off, throw that Haynes manual in the trash and buy a Bentley manual. The Haynes/Chilton manuals are pure garbage. Not very much info and a lot of info given is dead wrong.

Second of all, get it scanned with VCDS (fka Vag-Com) to get the VAG-specific codes. Generic OBD codes are worthless, especially on a VW. They often tell half the story, no story at all, or possibly even the wrong story completely.

That said, it sounds like you have an injection control problem. Could be something simple, could be that your injection pump is taking a dump. That would be the worst case scenario, a pump rebuild will run somewhere around $1000, not including R&R labor. DFIS in Portland, OR is the only way to go if the pump needs repair, send the pump there.

Where are you located? You need some expert help on this, which means the last place you should go is the VW dealer or any other shop that doesn't specialize in TDI repair. If you give me your location I can point you in the right direction.

I'm located in CT.

I used the Haynes manual as a guide to change my timing belt around 120000 and noticed the info was a bit lacking.

I've got $100 that says you did the timing belt wrong and the IP timing is off, causing the CEL. If you are lucky, that is all that is wrong. What parts did you replace when you did the TB?

You should have installed one of these kits: 33 PIECE DELUXE 100K MKIV ALH TDI TIMING BELT KIT by www.dieselgeek.com

With these specialty tools plus VCDS:
Metalnerd ALH Timing Belt Tool Kit by www.dieselgeek.com

Using this procedure only:

Anything short of that would require the job being done again, and the engine carefully inspected to verify that no damage was done internally. Being that you used whatever method was given in the Haynes manual (probably "Mark and Pray") there is a good chance that the IP timing is off which is causing the code.

Talk to this guy and tell him your story. He is a great guy and he can give you the help you need:

Also, check out the forums at Fred's TDI Page. TDIClub.com. VW TDI Enthusiast Community for more help and information.

Good luck.
