Default 02 TDI auto, few issues

Hi everyone. Found out there's another Beetle owner in one of my classes. His car is an 02 VW TDI auto. His door dinger stays on, all of the trans indicators (which gear it's in) stay on regardless of gear. He said he's got an intermittent CEL, but the car runs the same with or without it. He had an autoparts store scan it, and they told him it was a switch for the trans. (speed switch) I know I'm not the most versed with VWs, but I know on my Acura, if the speed switch is bad, my speedo quits. I know his main thing is trying to get the dinger to quit. He's got an hour drive each way to school.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Door ding is due to the door lock sensor not knowing when the door is open or closed. Common issue. Does he have a hard time locking the car? That would be an issue as well

The speed switch is another common issue for the auto trans. Make sure that he takes care of that auto trans. How many miles? Should have the fluid and filter changed every 40k. Otherwise, he's looking at a swap in his near future (trust me...I just did one a month ago for the same reason!). The speed switch may cause issues with his speedo, as well as shifting in his trans eventually. I would have that replaced asap. Find a TDI guru in your local area. There is a sticky here as to who to talk to. They will do much better work and be far less expensive than any dealer. TRUST ME! You live and learn....I'm trying to help other TDI'ers learn prior to having to live it!

Thanks Michelle. I'll refer him to MF. They have a good rep (and great commercials) in the area. He says that driving and shifting is fine, but time will tell I guess.

I looked at it after class today. Other than the dinger, I notice that on the dash (where it tells what gear you're in) shows that you're in all gears. They're are all blacked. I've got a buddy with a Vag Com, and I'm gonna try to get the two together.

Thanks again Michelle.
Oh, and the car's knocking on 125K.

eep! Service that tranny asap, or start saving for a swap. Cause almost the very day I hit 150k....my tranny started acting up....01M automatics are known for dieing around 100k-150k. There are few...and I mean...FEW that have made it much further past that. Though I do know of two that are over 200K. Luck and proper maintenance I guess.....

Okay. Got this critter scanned with a Vag Com today. He's throwing a P0705 in OBDII and the trans came up saying the multi function switch was in an unknown state. From what I can tell, the PO705 is a trans switch. Any thoughts? Thanks for the tips Michelle, I'll pass it along to Michael(the guy that has the TDI) BTW, do the manuals hold up better with the diesels? I've kicked around the thought of a TDI at some point.

Thanks.

yes, manuals are much better for the diesels. Not only do the manuals hold up but the mpg is MUCH better. 38-40 for the auto 44-48 or more for the 5 spd!

As far as I know the trans switch is a pretty common issue with the autos. Hopefully someone here will chime in as to how to fix it.
