I found a 2002 TDI NB on Craigslist and it sounds a little fishy. The guy says it's missing a title but I can get another one, he just doesn't have the time. He also says it's in need of a new timing belt and possible head job (no idea what a head job is) and he's selling it as a great parts car. Thing is, I have my heart set on a TDI NB and it's easily in my price range. How expensive is a new timing belt and head job? Should I steer clear of this?

I'd probe some more. Why does it need a possible head job? Did it overheat? Did the timing belt let go? The price is good, but it might need a lot of $ put into it. The title bit does weird me out. I'd probably steer clear myself for that reason. If you are unsure, you can do some info searching and see what it takes to get a new title.

Run away. Head job means they paid someone to do a cheap timing belt and it broke. The head will need to be replaced, as will potentially the pistons(s).

No title? No sale.

You're looking at $2k-ish just to make it runable, then title issue. It's a good parts car -- because it's legally not able to be driven because of title issues.
