The first way is easier, but could potentially be the worst way to go. It requires cutting your upper radiator hose and inserting an adapter in the new cut that allows for the connection of a temperature sensor to be installed. You can get a CNC machined version from 42 Draft Desgins, here... VW Universal Water Temp Adaptor The second way provides a much less destructive way of achieving your end results. (BUT, I'm not sure if it'll work for you as you have a 1.9 tdi, I thin the water hoses / connectors are the same, but you'd wand to verify that before buying this part). You purchase a CNC machined piece that fits between the coolant flange and the head. The major thing here is, it bolts directly into the head, so it's sturdier, and less likely to leak or break down. The downside is, unless you are mechanically inclined, you'll probably need to get this one done by a mechanic due to the location of the connection on the engine head. I purchased this particular piece before I realized that I can't reach the end myself. Now I have to save up and have a mechanic do it for me! And, if you go this route, you may consider putting in a new thermostat since it's at the exact same location. VW mk4 1.8T Water Temp Adaptor

Get the universal one. That 1.8T flange adapter will not fit a TDI.

OH!!!!
Forget what I said previously ... I forgot to give you one other link! I'm buying one of these soon I hope. UltraGauge Automotive Information Center and OBDII Scan Tool only $60 and it scans / clears codes, and gives you something like 34+ gauges for your car =) The thing can read up to 74 different things from your car but it's dependent upon your ecu and car. So the Beetles usually give you around 34 or so. Water temp being one of them ![]() See this other thread for photos of it in use and more info on it ![]() Ultra-Gauge.com And, this only takes 2 seconds to install, and you can use it in multiple vehicles! *heh* |
