Default 2002 tdi

Hi all I am looking at a 2002 TDI New Beetle with 125k miles for $4500. IS this a good price and what is the reliability of this model. I have heard trans problems it has an automatic. I want to buy it for my daughter.
Any help and advice would greatly be appreciated
Jerry

A auto trans with that kinda miles is a crap shoot. If I were you I would hold out for a stick. The price is good, but if the trans goes you will spend at least half that to replace it. And sticks are more fun.

Price isn't too bad, but the auto trans is crap. I would stay away, try to find a stick if she can drive one or is willing to learn. A TDI is extremely easy to drive with a manual. Plus she'll be a better driver as a result.

If she has to have an auto...I would suggest something other than a VW. They are great cars otherwise, especially with the TDI. As long as the timing belt system is maintained properly, then the car can run a good long time.

It would be worth it if you know going in that you will spend that kind of money. I would recommend spending a little more now for more car than expecting to do a transmission swap later. You never know in this economy and you will end up with more car and less maintenance, maybe.

Where are you located? I may be able to send you in the right direction. I can also get you in touch with a guy who will fly/drive out and do it at your location provided you have the proper facilities.
