So I was driving along, 100km/hour just left town and cell service when I noticed my car started to lose power. I had the cruise control on and I noticed the RPM's went right down to zero, then jumped back up. So I slowed down a bit, only to notice that at this point, my car has completely lost power and shut right off entirely. So I pulled over to the shoulder and put on my 4ways. Looked at my dash - and my Generator LIght was On.
I checked my manual - and did as it suggested (except drive to the nearest VW dealership because that was 125kms away). I looked for loose belts, and since I dont even really know what I'm looking for, I just sort of touched everything and made sure nothing was hanging down. After a nice person pulled over to help, and checked out to make sure the belts were still on, we tried to jump the car. Thought maybe it needed a boost. Did not start. Had a suggestion that it could be the alternator... any other ideas as to what it could be? Fuel was full. Oil was just changed - checked it when I pulled over and it's good. I thought it could be the mass-airflow sensor, I had one go on me a few years back, however, when that happend I just lost revving power, and could still drive to the nearest shop. However, it won't start. It sounds like it wants to start, but doesn't ever turn over. I had the glow plugs replaced 3 weeks ago, but I've put 2500kms on it since then so I don't think that has anything to do with it. (I know it sounds like a lot, but I drive a lot). Also, my battery has died on me a few times this month - but it was cold when I was up North, and it's been warm back here where I live. I hope thats all the relevant information... Thank you for any information you guys might have ![]() Edit to Add: 99 Beetle, 1.9 TDI 330,000kms Manual Trans. |

Fuel pump relay...
This is what they told me. Had it replaced, and the car is back up and running again. Any other opinions as to whether or not that is what it could actually be? I asked another VW mechanic from an independant shop if it was possible for my car to lose power and shut down like that because of the relay and he said yes. After looking over my car they found no other issues, so I drove it out of the dealership today. PS. Never taking it to the dealership again. had the worst experience with their service staff - and it was a freakin ordeal for me to talk to the mechanic myself... |
