I don't know if you can replace just the brushes. My mechanic told me it was more trouble than it's worth. Of course, my starter was under extended warranty, so it was probably easier on me that way. We looked for parts online and came across this listing for a

It's possible but you would also want to replace both bearings as you will be shocking them to take the alternator apart. IMHO have it rebuilt locally if you need to save money (and who doesn't) that way it is doen right and you have a warranty at about half the cost of new or reman thru an auto parts store.

could be, not sure. But the same applies if the brushes are worn out the bearings have quite a bit of time on them. If you are adamant of replaicing brushes make sure to replace springs as well and you can get them thru a local rebuilding house I am sure. You might alos remove the brushes adn see if they have any markings on them to help identify the maker.
