Default Holy Cold Start Bugman!

-36 this morning, wind blowing with a chill factor close to -50.

Glow plug light finally went out, more due to boredom than from actually warming up, leg getting sore holding in the clutch.

Took the bug a few minutes to crank over but she went.

Someone remind me to stop lazing around in July and build a garage this year!

WOW, it started in those frigid conditions? Amazing. I always thought that a Diesel would have a hard time in cold weather but it seems that is not the case with the Beetle TDI.

It is a lot harder now after 14 years than it was new.

I have a battery warmer and a block warmer, I should double check each of those because it just doesn't seem as good now as it once was.

Thats still awsome that it started in such cold temps . ( not sure what that is in us temp º ) . My 81 jetta diesel i had back in the day with 350K miles would fire right up when the temps were in the teens with no windchill, if the temps dropped into the single digits, id have to plug in the block heater with in 10 mins he would fire right up .

Once the degrees drop to that low Celcius and Fahrenheit are almost the same. -36 Celcius = -33 Fahrenheit

No matter how you prefer your degrees it is TOO DAMN COLD

It warmed up today, only -30 when I went out this morning.

Still a hard start.

It's supposed to warm up to normal values, -10ish on the weekend, and then snow a ton.

I swear, I'm gonna build a garage this summer. Nice heated garage.

I use a FrostHeater on a timer, it comes on at 4:30am to leave at 7. It's great, the low temp light never comes on and the cabin heat/defrost works right away.

Link if interested.

In extreme cold weather climates you should be using a additive in your fuel....Diesel fuel gels and makes starting a little harder. Use the Power Service in the White bottle from Wal Mart, it's the additive for extreme low temps....The Power Service in the Gray bottle is for warmer climates....I add 8 oz when I fill up 13 or so gallons. If I am topping off using maybe 5 or 6 gallons, I use maybe 3 to 4 oz. It's OK to splash in Power service now and then. It does a number of things, like boosting the Cetane in the fuel.....

The fuel here in winter already conditioned for winter to prevent gelling. However it has much lower Cetane values, so adding a boost becomes even more important.

Without that already in the tank, I think during winter the fuel would solidify in the pump at the station. Sometimes it does anyway when it gets -35, the gas pumps are still going but the diesel is stopped as it won't flow properly.

Yup, that is the only place where Celcius and Fahrenheit are equal.
