Default Rear Brakes

Has anyone had trouble with the rear brakes sticking on? I had the left emergency brake cable changed and the caliper cleaned. Now the right one is sticking on. I only have 130,000 kilometers on the car. I don't think I've ever changed an emergency brake cable on any other vehicle we've owned.

My right one freezes when it's freezing out. It was cleaned last year and stopped, then it started doin it again this year, i'm pretty sure it's the caliper itself. It ususally happens to the right caliper, as per my research.

If you click my link in my signiture on doing the brakes you will find a picture of the rear brake pad slider on the Caliper carrier.

The curb side of the car.. in the usa and Canada that is the right side tend to rust first because that is the side that splashes thru all the puddles.

The carrier is made of iron and will rust rather aggresivly this puts pressure on the pads and keeps them from returning. I have needed to clean them up with a dremel tool a few times now and put in new clips. I also coat them with some brake caliper grease in an effort to keep them from rusting. This seems to work at least on the cars I have tried it on.

The reason most people notice it first in cold weather is because rust absorbs water and when it freezes... it swells, thus locking up the rear brake. When the brake warms up the water melts and the brake releases. Thats the first hint that its time to clean up the carrier.

Give it a try... I did it once and then discovered I didnt do a good enough job. Now 2 years later they still arent sticking.

I disconnected the right rear emergency brake cable and the car now rolls nicely. I guess the cable is seized inside! Also my car will bottom out the rear suspension quite easily. It is at it's worst when one wheel hits a bump by itself. If I hit a large bump with both rear tires square on it seems to absorb the energy without bottoming out??? I have manually bounced the car on all four corners and the shocks seem to be ok.

I had the right rear brake cable replaced, all's well now. Except for the $104.00 they charged me.
