Default Turbo problem over 80...Help!

I have a 2001 VW Beetle TDI. Everytime I drive over 80 kmh the turbo cuts out. It will reset if I shut the car off and turn it back on. Then with any speed over 80 it cuts out again. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Jeff

Let's start with the obvious question:

Is it 100% stock?

Your car is going into "limp mode" probably from too much turbo pressure. The mechanism that controls the pressure gets stuck on TDIs if you dont drive hard very often. Its actually better to get on the gas at least one time every time you drive it to exercise the turbo.

The car is bone stock. I have had the car for 6 months now and have just realized that this car has had a clogged "one way valve" from the turbo that has not allowed the turbo to function properly. I just had the valve replaced and it is a new car, as you can imagine!!! Now the turbo kicks out and I did have a warning light to the effect of "too much turbo"...

Does Anyone Know If This Mechanism Can Be Adjusted Or Is The Turbo Dying??

I'm sorry I didn't follow.

"I just had the valve replaced and it is a new car"

it's fixed... isn't it?

I'll try to explain better!
When I had the valve replaced...it was a new car as the turbo started working. The problem with the turbo dying did not begin until after the valve was replaced. So, when I first got the car...the turbo did not work because the valve was plugged. Then after the valve was replaced...the car worked great! Now, it kicks out only after a few minutes of driving...

Default loosing power over 80

Probaly MAS air problem, very common at this MPH.
Pull connector off of MAS air, hook in ohms reading meter on end terminals, if you do not get a reading, that is your problem.

How mechanically inclined are you? I just fixed my car by taking off the actuator, the thing with the vacuum hose attached to it on the turbo, and moved the mechanism that it is hooked to to free it up. My car works excellent now!

From what side is that photo of the TDI turbo taken, and what's the best way to get to the turbo and lube the actuator? Just to help newbies on turbo preventive maintenance. I've only sprayed some metal protectant from below.

That photo was taken from the top, if you were to look behind the engine with the intake off. I couldnt see when I did it but I just soaked the top of the turbo with PB Blaster and aimed for the pivot point were the lever goes inside where the arrow is pointing.

Thanks! That's it, with the intake off. That explains why I had never seen that view. I've sprayed the turbo parts with Amsoil Metal Protectant (a spray like WD40) but only from below. So I'll see how I can sneak my arm from the top. A little preventive maintenance can go along way later on.

If you go under the car its really easy to get your hands and the spray can behind the engine. Soak the little guy from the top!
