So ive noticed some little things about my VW that should not be.

1) First of all the locks are all screwy. If i hit the lock button on the remote once, the alarm will activate but the drivers door wont lock. If i hit the unlock button twice and then the lock button, it will usually lock both doors.

2) The theater lighting on the drivers door does not turn on when you open the door.

3) It never chimes if you open the drivers door with your light on or etc.

Anyone know whats going on?

I don't know about the first two, but did is your bug under warranty? A while back, I took my certified pre-owned to the dealership for a CEL and asked about the chime not working when my lights are on and I open the door. It was covered under the warranty and the fixed it.

I have the same issue with the lights... they work for the passengers side but not my drivers side. If I leave my headlights on, on the keys in... it DOES NOT chime (and my reflector at the bottom of the door panel does not light up when the door is opened). I bought the car used... so I took it in to my dealership.

It is the sensor on the latch. It needs to be re-soldered (sp) because the door thinks its always closed. I got an estimate of 356.00 parts and labor... I opted not to do it.

I hope I dont leave my headlights on... but the 356.00 just doesnt seem worth it... But I do wish it chimmed to let me know about the headlights.

THERE IS A THREAD on how to do this repair yourself on www.vwvortex.com... it was done on a jetta but the same system applies to our NB... I think its a little over my DYI head... but you might want to look into it.

I hope that helps. I will post the link to that thread if I find it tomorrow.

I BELIEVE this is the thread that explains fixing the door latch sensor (just scroll down a couple posts, the first post is about the regulators)... I hope this helps.

This Thread seems to be helpful as well, and explains the "symptoms" both our beetles have:

"- door chime went out (no big deal)
- door alarm and key remote acted strange...to lock doors, i had to unlock them, then lock them a second time.
- door light went out"

I have a 2000, had it from day one. My chime quit working too. Not a problem except I do miss the low gas ding. My light in the radio has gone out. But that's about it. I had to have the AC compressor replaced but that was about 2 years ago.

Lezlie and a VERY much loved Baby Blue
