Default Normal hiss of hoses?

Hey there,

I unfortunately had a check engine light that came on today.

I took the Beetle into the shop (not a dealership) to see what codes were coming up.
I also looked under the hood to see if I could do anything beforehand.

I noticed a hissing sound with the engine running when lifting the hood.
I don't know if I've ever listened to the engine enough before to know if this was normal or not.
The guys at the shop said it was some sort of hose that had become burnt or dry-rotted that was affecting my fuel pressure.

On the way to the shop, it seemed as if I was using up a lot of gas.

The check engine light is off but when popping the hood I can still hear the hisssssss.

Is this normal air flow of the engine? Should I be concerned.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
Dick
