i am a total spaz about this car. i bought it at 83K so i'm kinda paranoid. i have 3.5 years of payments to go and i plan on keeping the thing until it biodegrades out from under me. take THAT new car world!

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

I know with the old ACVWs that if you beat the tar out of them they last longer. It's when you start to baby them that they crap out on you.

Ok straight scoop coming on up...

XXX Full
XXX
XXX
XXX 1/2 Quart low
XXX
XXX
XXX Add 1 Quart

I find the best time to check my oil is after I fill the tank.

Shut off engine, fill the tank, pop hood, get paper towel from the dispenser, pull out dipstick, wipe off, reinsert dipstick and look at it. If its more than a half quart low add some oil.

That has been my habit for over 20 years now and works out just right. In my 1.8T I have yet to need to add any oil but I still check it too make sure all is still well.

If you have noisy lifters you may want to expierement a bit with different oil viscosities. If you are using a 5W30 try a 0W40, 5W40, 5W50, or even a 10W40.. I would start with the OW40 first.

The hydrolic lifters use oil to suspend them and to stay in adjustment. If the oil is too low, too thick or too thin they can make a racket. My Miata was a major PITA when it came to this. I was always playing around with different grades and eventually what worked in it was a 5W50 but after 1500 miles they would start to rattle again so I just figured it was her way of telling me to change the oil

Another cause of noisy lifters can also be a clogged oil galley, clogged pick up tube screen or a damaged lifter. Unfortunatly this is probably just a bit over your head so you would want a mechanic to check that out for you. I wish our cars had an oil pressure gauge because this would show up on it.

I wouldn't worry too much about that stuff though as the 2.0 is not exactly prone to those problems and it would be exceptionally rare to have that occour.

i finally found a guide in my bentley manual that explained the dipstick and with a picture, too! my oil level is fine.

i am taking the car to the mechanic as the engine is making all kinds of noises, it seems. it pinged when it was hot and ticks now that it's colder. who the frick knows! i think i might bite the bullet, cash in some stocks, get curby all fixed up and then quit worrying about him for awhile!
