Yep. Most of the time though there will be a broken plastic ring in the metal tube part. Use a small pick to try and "fish" that out. Also use a long screw driver and chisel off the old drip stick tube. If a couple of pieces of plastic drop down the tube, don't worry to much. The oil pick up tube has a mesh screen that will stop it. You would have to get a lot down there to clog said mesh screen.

When you put the new tube on, you should feel it "snap" into place... and the dip stick itself will be a very snug fit for a little while.

Default dipstick tube

What wonderful engineering, making the dipstick tube out of plastic that gets brittle and breaks apart. That was a great idea!

OK, I have a 1.8t so it should be pretty much the same. My problem is whenever I pull the dipstick out the whole friggin tube comes off. What have I done wrong? It is a new one since of course, the old one shattered last fall. Can I get a better one anywhere? Possibly NOT plastic?

I just hold the 'tube' in place w/my thumb(there at the bottom of Bill's pic; at the bracket) and pull the dipstick out. Use both hands, it'll work out alright.

I just need a new dipstick. Mine's all crumbly. Maybe i'll replace the whole tube this summer with metal.

First, thanks for the reply's. It's not the dipstick that I really need. It's the tube. Anywhere I can get one that is NOT OE? That orange plastic sux.

I replaced my dipstick tube about six months ago. After 7 years it cracked and came apart. It took a little time and patience to clean all the little broken pieces of the old tube out but the new one snapped in nicely. No problems ever since. If it lasts another 7, I'll be happy. As for the orange color, it sure comes in handy when checking your oil in low light
