I won't be any tech help, but I hope someone will come along who can help you out. I'm pretty sure that's what I had to have replaced on my Speedy last Friday, to the happy tune of $750

I help you diagnose the darn thing......

1) Let your bug sat for some hours till its completely cold (the engine!)

2) open the hood and turn on the engine....

3) Breathe calmly.

4) Go to the front of the car and wait like 2 minutes (sometimes is like 4 minutes) but never longer than that!.

5) you will hear an electric motor wirrrr, signalling that the secndary air pump is working, It will sitch on wirr and then shut off for less than a minute then it will turn on againg and keep doing so till the engine warms, then no more use for the pump.

_______
IF THE PUMP DOESNT WORK IT WILL THROW A CEL ASAP and it wont go away since everytime you start the bug it will malfunction....
-------

Ok I am a master of the obvious but how I fix it?

first if the pump doesnt work doesnt make a sound IS DEAD, check the fuses, if th fuses are of OUCH your secondary air pump is dead and will cost a lot to fix (put a new one).

In miy experience the secondary Air pumps doesnt fail that much since its a low emmisions equipment.

If the electric motor works then you have a leak in the hoses that go into the secondary air pump air system. so check them:

the hoses coming from the pump itself and THE HOSE that MAKE THE code :
Secondary air pump malfunction incorrect flow

(95%) thats the problem...

its a small plastic hose that goes into a part called the cup cake because it resembles a cup cake! doh!

So see the pic there is a arrow signaling the "BAD hose" see how it goes behind the dohhickies there and attaches to the cup cake (also with arrows) it goes behind it and attaches AND ITS A PITA to take out and put a new one, a very small hole in this hose and voila CEL and code.....

if you have any questions feel free to ask....

P.D. drink a beer disconnect the battery for 10 minutes, reconect it cell gone and finish beer!

Thanks for the help. I will check and let you know. Can silicone hoses be used to replace the hose going to the cup cake?
