Unhappy What type of coolant for 2001 New Beetle

My son in living in Maui and he usually does these things for me... but I was wondering if you guys can tell me what type of engine coolant that I need to put into my 2001 new beetle... the overflow looks empty and I don't know if I should just put water - it is 107 degrees here in LA and we are melting - I've smelled some type of hot smell and checked the oil (which is usually low - I've never had a car that uses so much oil its crazeeee) any way.. I put oil and still had that smell - so I looked at the other fluids and the overflow looks empty... do I have to go to the dealer and spend a small fortune or can I pick up coolant at the auto parts store! Please help!

Thanks guys!

ok i cannot stress this enough...you need a special VW coolant called G-12. It's pink the coolant at local stores is going to be green and that is not good for your engine at all. locally g12 is $24.

ditto, go to the dealer. trying to save money by using something else is not worth the risk.

But, your car should not be using coolant, the red temp light comes on when the coolant is low.

If it continues to loose coolany you need to have it checked out.

Thank you for the info - the red coolant light has not come on but I noticed the overflow is empty??? Should it be??

I will go get some coolant to have on hand just in case.

Thanks for the info!

Let me say this a bit more strongly - do NOT use any other coolant than G-12. Even a bit of the green/yellow stuff reacts with it, and the globs start to form and will block passages. Yes, it's not cheap, but it should last a long, long time.

it should not be empty, there is a line on the side of the coolant tank that it should be filled to.

Thank you all for your advises! I will go over to the dealer and buy the G-12 fluid!

Thanks again - I really appreciate it!
