Default Oil Filter

Can someone recommend the proper style of oil filter wrench for getting at that hard-to-muster-up-any-leverage oil filter in the 2.0 beetle? Thanks!

I just use your average, everyday oil filter.

Umm.. I think they wanted to know what wrench... What I find best is the socket kind with a plactic grip the shape of your filter on the end, then you just ratchet it on.

the one I use, is like a big socket it fits on the end of the filter, and you turn it with a standard ratchet wrench, a 12" extension makes it easier to use.

Any autoparts store should have them.

That'll teach me to read while invoicing again. Actually it won't. haha.

As for the wrench, the old fashioned strap wrench type.

...how do you go about that? I tried this last time and there was too much junk in the way to even get it to grip.

Beer and a lot of swearing. I think I may try the socket type next though. Save my knuckles some trouble.

Thanks guys..ya, that strap-on ( ) just wasn't getting it done...no where to put my hands without ripping my knuckles up. DOH!

I had the dealer do it last time I had it in and they tightened the hell out of it...it's not budging!

I'll try that ratchet end and a few of Standards beers

I use those too... but I like to stick em on just tight enough that I can't just un-do it with my hand... but that's just me.

I use a variation of the good old strap wrench--instead of a handle it has a 3/8" square hole for a ratchet. I put an extension on it to bring the ratchet down below similar to the style that fits on the end of the filter that has already been mentioned, but this one never slips. I bought it clear back in the early 90's when I had my '87 Jetta GLI--so I don't remember where I got it.

Since I don't reuse Oil Filters (no one should) I just use the quickest method possible to remove it. This is my favorite tool for getting off a Filter.
