Unhappy Misfiring, blinking CEL, No Codes

Hello. I have a 2002 NB which has misfired twice in the last month with a blinking CEL and yet no codes when checked after a few cycles of the ignition. I think I've read somewhere that if you cycle the engine 3-5 times the codes are gone, but I went to AutoZone after 1 cycle beyond the misfiring and they saw no codes. The misfirings can be "reset" by simply pulling off the road, turning off the car, restarting (there's a Microsoft Windows joke in here somewhere).

Originally I thought the issue was easily a cracked coil pack but here in MICHIGAN, we had rain all day yesterday and it never misfired. Had a cold morning this morning; still no misfiring.

Car has 60,000 miles, new plugs as of 2 weeks ago, the original plug wires and original coil pack/dist.

Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on where to investigate? I'm almost tempted to buy a cheap code reader and wait for it to misfire again and read the codes on the side of the road while its still misfiring.

Thanks in advance.
Eddie

I have the GS305 scanner ... as well as the more expensive Actron that does not read VW codes. This is the seller I bought mine from, he doesn't have the 305's right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GS200...mZ330041819796

But you do know you can't read them while it is misfiring ... have to have engine off to read.

My 02 has misfired a few times and never left a DTC code. I don't know why that is. And the engine can be on for diag, my state inspection and myself with VAGCOM scan the car with the engine running. The ignition just needs to be on but the scan is the same w/ the engine running or not.

I had the same problem approx. a month ago. I replaced the Ignition Coil Pack and the problem went away.
