Default Stalling along iwth other problems

My friend has an 01 bug. It stalls out basically whenever it wants to. When you start it up most of the time you can hear a loud cranking noise that does not sound good one bit. The car does not go over 4000 rpms at all. Oh and when we were driving somewhere today we were stuck in third gear and had to get off the parkway. After we turned the car off, went to a store, started it back up it was fine... for a bit.
Any (hopefully easy) solutions?

TIA

If the car is stuck in 3rd gear, that would be limp mode. I'd hazard a guess that there are DTCs stored in the ECM and TCM. Find someone with VAG COM and do an "Auto Scan" for your car, copy the results and paste them here.

Off the top of my head, 2 wild hair guesses... engine speed sensor or fuel pump relay... but I may as well pick winning loto numbers, that would be just as good of a guess at this point.

Yeah we went to an autozone to do the computer diagnosis but they said it was broken, but I don't know how believable that was. We will do so later.

Thanks.

As for an undate, he brought it in and there were three things he told me what was wrong.

1. Something with the 02 sensor...(will get more info)
2. Crankshaft bad shape
3. The speed sensor is getting no voltage which is limited his speed range.

Tell me if those could be the problems.

Thanks

What did theymean by "crankshaft bad shape"? You'd have to tear down the engine to determine that. Most likely they were talking about a crank position sensor. How many miles are on the car, and what major/minor maintenance has been done to it?

Well lates start from the beginning then.
It's an 01 Beetle it has I think 105,000 miles on it.
My friend called me up and told me what was wrong with it, and he probably didn't know what he was talking about. The way it looks, I don't think there were to many maintences to it, but who am I to judge. We are going to hang out later and talk about it and all that jazz.

Hello All! And Spunka of course! Tis I who has the bug with problems, only couldn't get on here in time.

The codes are as follows :

P0420 - Bad 02 sensor. Sustem efficiency for bank 1 is below threshold for the current engine operating conditions. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank.

P0725 - A malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for the engine speed input.

P0322

There is no voltage signal from the egine speed input (Crankshaft position sensor, distributor tachometer signal etc.)

The car is an 01 2.0 with 105,000 miles a little over that of course.

Maintenence includes a new alternator and cat. Neuspeed exhaust also added. The cat and alternator were both done by the same mechanic, who I showed these problems to (twice might i add ) and he didn't find anything wrong. I went to AutoZone and got the codes, and I'm going back tomorrow. It's my dad's mechanic, so ya know, he's "his guy" and he doesn't wanna go anywhere else, so unless I find some cash fast, I'm kinda stuck with him.

Any ideas on a fix for any of this, other than the 02 sensor?
