Default New Here/New NB Owner

Hello to all and thanks for having such a great site!
My name is Tim,
I have a 99 Beetle 2.0.
I have always been a vw owner...have had a couple of micro bus's...two gti's, two golf's, and one jetta. However, I am new to the Beetle. I am really enjoying it so far. I have read many, many complaints and 'if you have one, get rid of it,' remarks on other sites...I have only had my beetle for about two weeks. 66,000....great shape...my mechanic checked it out first (vw tech, but not dealer), and he said it looked good.
Any info or comments would be appreciated.
Tim

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info....
Yeah, It has been a blast to drive so far and am loving it. The problem I am having right now is with a leak somewhere. I get water in somewhere and it makes the headliner wet in the upper left corner of the headliner right above front left of the drivers' seat. It doesn't have a sunroof, so I am thinking it has to be coming in through the top window seal may-be? Anyone else have this problem before?

Hi Tim and welcome to the nut house. Since you don't have a sunroof I don't know what to tell you about the leak. Very possibly the windshield was replaced and not sealed correctly. So where are the pics of your car??

Default hmmm

I believe I have found the problem....hopefully...
I was checking the seals out while I was washing it, and found the door seal (where the wind noise comes from) seems to be letting water in over the inner door jam seal....thus letting the headliner soak it up from the piece that snaps in the upper part of the door jam. Hopefully this will work. Thanks for your reply LNZBUG....By the way, I like your bug....I will post some pics sometime when I get the chance. It is just plain ol' stock black with no real mods yet besides a
k & n air filter....soon though.

66k...and your mechanic checked it. Great.

Did you ask him specifically to check your timing belt and water pump?

Those should be replaced every 50k, is what my VW dealer told me.

Can be pretty nasty if it snaps on ya (aka: practically crumple your engine).

Default yesssss

yep, he checked the timing belt, and said it was fine, or seemed to be....didn't say anything about the water pump though....
I am not sure when the timing belt was replaced last...
the first things i did to it were-put a k and n in there, and changed over to synthetic oil....
i plan on doing lots to it, little by little.....
thanks for the reply....

Thank you. Don't worry too much about the timing belt. It's really only horrible when it snaps on a 1.8t. I wouldn't wait past 80k too much though, just to make sure. Good work on finding the source of your leak. My Trooper leaks there also and just tonight I was reminded of that when I sat down
