Torquie ... ehhhh! Sounds like the time I broke the input shaft on my tranny in my 80 Stang 2.3L 4 Banger against a V8 stang of the same vintage.

Looks like you'll need a new boot kit too...
Prolly for the inner CV too--those clamps don't "re-use" well at all.

For the "headache factor" you'd probably be further ahead to just buy a remanufactured axle assembly.

You got the assembly with the CVs already on both ends? $86 seems awfully cheap for that.

Probably a rebuilt for that price, I called Raxles.com and the standard ones with the new CV's on both sides are about $350 a set, then they have the HiPerf ones rated to about 500HP, I think they were about $350 each. The rebuilts won't hold up to too many chirps.

No kidding. I'm a cheapskate, but CV axles are one place I wouldn't try to skimp on quality.

Couldn't a hollow tube actually help resilience? It would allow some twisting, as opposed to being brittle, and has more surface area, which can actually strengthen.

How are the stock ones made? Solid or hollow?

That doesn't sound right. You didn't break the axle shaft ... you broke the end of it where it begins to spline. That's the solid part you broke.

Jazzcat .... look at www.raxles.com audi TT would be the same as the 1.8T and probably same as 2.0 ... the 225TT probably uses a different axel since it is AWD.

It broke in the right place though, right? Isn't that a shear point, to break at a built in weak spot so as to save the rest of the drivetrain? I think they designed in that break point on purpose.

I just said the same thing 3 times in a row.

1stvwparts.com was about $430 for an assembled axle "ready to bolt in" as vdubbugman53 describes his. I'd be wary of something that much cheaper--maybe I'm off?

So, if this is good and works for you, you must dish out where you got it, because it is so much cheaper than VW. I still don't understand whether you got just the axle and will be moving the original CV joints to it or whether you got an assembly CV to CV for $86. Which is it?
