Default Passenger Side Window Down!

I have a 99 NB and I'm struck again with the Window issue that VW put out a special extended warranty on - window goes down, then I hear grinding noise, then window stuck in down position.

If I'm not wrong, that warranty is no longer valid for me as it was only suppose to be extended to 7 years. I bought mine in Oct of '98, so its past 7 years. I'll double check with dealer in the morning.

If it's not covered, I'm thinking about fixing it myself, as I know that pretty soon, the driver side will also be next (this is what happened 3 years - when it was covered by the warranty).

At any rate, I'll looking at my Bentley soon to figure it out. If someone has any tips or advise before I get started, I'd appreciate it. I'm assuming the disassembly is not the hard, but I could be wrong. Can someone also tell exactly what part needs to be replaced?

I had this problem too, and had it repaired by a workshop, but as far as I remember (My bentley is in my garage a few miles away so I have to do this from my memory) the only big issue is to get the window out. Do this directly after you removed the door panel. For that, you need to get to the screws that hold the window to the sliding rail. They are behind some plastic covers in the steel inner door panel. As your window is stuck, the screws might be in the wrong place and that's where it becomes tricky - good luck. Once you have done that you will be able to remove the inner door panel and get to the motor/wire/reel assembly used to lower and raise the window. One of the reels has snapped off, causing the wire to get jammed.

I think you should put up a fuss if they want to deny you.

Yes your out of warranty, but their part OBVIOUSLY had manufacturing defects.

Besides that, if it was replaced before, maybe you can get them to cover it 7yrs since THAT part was put in. ?

Create a fuss, get the regional vw representative in there.

There SHOULD have been a recall; but they chose the cheaper, shadier resolution. Too bad it didn't fix YOUR PROBLEM. Just theirs.

I thought VW extended the window regulator TSB on all MkIV VeeDubs.

Our dealer replaced the ones in the 1999 Jetta we used to own around 103k miles at no charge, and we were a bit beyond the 7 year timeframe.

if it was fixed over 12 months or 12k miles ago then the new parts are out of warranty. the new parts are NOT covered by the 7 year extention.
a nice dealer MAY fix it for free, a crumby or buy the book(vwoa's book that is) dealer will not.

Yeah.. no luck with VWOA. I have the Bentley manual and will see if I can tackle this myself at this point.

I would appreciate any heads-up or curve-ball I might find along the way.

Can you confirm there isn't any special tools needed to it.

My passenger window just went tonight. [argh] Please post back if you have some luck.

Anyone know how many hours this takes a professional to do?

Mine just went tonight too!!! This is the first time it has broken, I have a 2001, does anyone know if I'll be able to have it fixed for free? I'm expecting "no."

I was enjoying the nice warm day, putting my windows down, and then CRUNCH
Please do update on how your home repair goes.

Kermit and Susan...
I'm gonna attempt to fix it myself using the Bentley repair manual. I'll see if I can shoot some pix and post it with instruction on how exactly I did it. But you'll have to be patient... it may take a few days. Hopefully we get other feedbacks before then...

My window on my 2001.5 dropped a few weeks ago... because it was the Regulator and not the clips they refused to fix it, unless I paid. So now I have the window up... and Im not touching it for right now. I paid a few THOUSAND dollars on window motors, clips and regluator in my mk3 jetta, I was hoping that it would actually be covered for my beetle

Oh well, this is literally the only issue I have had with my VWs in almost a decade of ownership.

Default Basher!!!!

Dude... You've done this before... so I need your advise.
I know this is off-topic in the forum, but I thought I'd give it shot.

I have removed the door trim, but I am stuck.

I am now suppose to disconnect the wiring from the connection at the A-pillar location and thread it back out towards the door so I remove the carriage assembly (where the wiring is hook-up to and to various parts including those plastic fasteners that keep them in place).

Anyways, if you've ever done this before, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

The part I'm stuck at is how the heck do I thread that wiring through the rubber bellow (the rubber hose thing that the wiring goes through to get from the car to the door... the rubber hose thing that you see by the door hinge when you open the door).

The wiring has a big plastic connector that terminates it and the rubber below is only big enough for the wires, not the connector.

The Bentley manual simply says to pull the wiring through the bellow and out so the wiring is free and the carriage assembly can be removed without the wiring holding it back.

If you've done this before, how did you over come this? I suppose I can cut off the connector and just patch it up later, but I want to make sure there isn't something much easier and proper I'm overlooking...

Thanks in advance.

I'm not 100% sure but as far as I remember I did not remove that cable from the A-pillar. Instead I disconnected it from all the parts in the door instead.

Basher...
I was thinking that's the way to go, but do you remember all those plastic fasteners... the kind that if you can't really pull out without breaking the plastic parts that hold it in place...
I guess I could find another way to fasten the cables when I re-install it back.
Thanks anyway...

It's a while ago, but I think I pulled them out. Just in case you could order some new fastners from your local dealer. They're probably very cheap.

Basher...
My window is completely down. What's the "trick" in raising high enough to align the bolts at the holes so I can take out the window?? Does the window hae to be all the way up for the bolts to align in the holes?
