Default Check Engine Light Just Turned On

I've heard (read) talk about getting codes from the car to diagnose problems. Is there a way to get a code for why the check engine light came on, if so, how do i do it? Thanks for the info!

a) go to autozone and ask them to use an OBD (on board diagnostics) reader.

b) buy one. ($200-$300 for a good one; $40 for a bare bones 'almost helps' one. [clears codes, doesn't really help much in regards to finding the source of the problem though])

c) find someone in your area that has one.

There's a few lists on here of vag-com owners who are willing to help out others by scanning other peoples cars for them.

Thanks noR, any idea how much autozone charges for that, there's one right near my house.

Over here they charge it to your credit card and give you a full credit when you return it. I bought one (OBD II scanner) yesterday because it was inconvenient going back and forth doing this excercise while the CEL was returning periodically...

You dont have to rent the scanner. They should just scan it right there for you and tell you the code.
