It hasnt come back on yet, but i only drive the car about 15miles a week because I dont know if the previous owner did the timing belt or not.
I will take it to the stealership if the light comes back on because I hear that they are covered for 10 years or 120k miles per the Tech article that was givin to me

I'm having the same problem with mine (as well as the starter screetch described above). Last week I reset the light after reading the P0420 code. It came back today (about 200 miles later).

I called the dealer and they said they will check it for $115. If the cat comes up bad, then they initiate some kind of internal check of the cat and it will either clear the code or tell them to replace the cat. If they clear the code then they send me away and they wait until I come back 2 more times where they will replace the cat under warranty anyway (and I assume reimburse me for the diagnostics).

I'd go find a dealer that didn't have their heads in their azz! Were you on candid camera or something? How could anyone say such BS to you straight to your face without laughing?

It was on the phone. I'm not too concerned. They have a pretty good service department. It's much better than the service department at the dealer I bought it from. They had trouble with tire rotations and oil changes.

I take it in on Friday. I'll post what happens.

Took the bug in today and the VW dealer replaced the Cat under warranty. The motor is quiet now, it had a sputter sound before (for a number of years).

My check engine light came back on today after it was reset about 45 miles ago, so I will take it to the dealer and see what is up.

Default P0420 code

Hey All.
My 01 automatic 2.0 gas has had three cats.
It always showed P0420 when another one went bad.
I failed inspection every year I've had it since new.
I had two dealer warranty cats and one aftermarket one.
The mechanic didn't install it correctly and the flex pipe off the manifold cracked. Another mechanic took it all down fixed it up & replaced the bad part all for $155.00 :-) .
Now I just need a MAF senser & hopefully I can pass inspection.
