Default Want More Power!!!!!

i just bought a 99 gls auto for 6k has 50,000 miles. i thought it was a great deal so i jumped on it the car is in good condition. i would have gotten a 1.8t but it was 2k more and had double the mileage so i got this from my cousin.

i was wondering what would be the best way to get 200 whp. will adding a turbo to the stock motor blow due to high compression or is there lots of room for expansion? i wish my car wasnt automatic but oh well.

let me hear some idea since most of the mods on here are done on 1.8t

thanks

are there any vw specialist around san francisco/bay area

If you have time to mess around with the tuning, fabrication, and have second car, turbocharging might be your best answer.
However, if you want zero-headache, moderate power gain (approx. 160whp), easy DIY (a cave man can do it! ), then find a used neuspeed supercharger. I installed it 3 years ago and never have to bother with it.

x2 about the Neuspeed charger. We put mine on in 3 weekends while it was in storage, maybe 8 hours total, including running around for parts since I bought the kit used.

I put it together for right around $2000 and it hasn't caused me any problems.

..Plus, the supercharger whine is killer.

but still slow...if you want 200 whp you have to turbo it...kinetic will be coming out with a kit that is not much more then the nospeed charger but will put the supercharger to shame. or you can get your own kit together for around 2500 and make the same power i am depending on your mechanical ability

i heard that the neuspeed supercharger was like having a factory installed supercharger. power and reliability. when i think of turbos there is always going to a problem some where down the line. do you think having an automatic will effect the performance if i got a turbo. there is probably no point of getting a bov for it also.

i used to drive a civic hatchback running a jdm type r engine. i spent close to 6k with a new clutch and race radiator. put out about 176 whp and the car is much lighter than the bug. after 2 weeks of abuse with the engine i got bored of it. maybe it will be a different story with a turbo oppose to NA

im not really trying to make it faster than my last car but i want my bug to be alittle more fun to drive.

Pfft, I think the turbo has gone to your head.

The Neuspeed charger isn't made for crazy power, it's made for reliability and to be pretty much maintenance free. It's easy to install and then you can just forget about it.

I've been a part of the local VW scene for over 3 years and in that time I've personally seen a 300whp K04 1.8T throw a rod through its oilpan. I've seen a MK2 16VT break a timing belt and blow up. I've seen a MK4 2.0T that worked great for 2 years and then started burning as much oil as it was gas.

I would never put an aftermarket turbo system on my only car, but that's just me. Both turbos and superchargers have their place, everything is give and take.

but yea the auto trans really may not like eather of the charging options.....it really wont like 200 whp...if you dont have another mode of transportation and paitence the turbo is not the way to go....but if you really are itchin for the power br ready to shell about 3gs and have a good time

Oh for sure, superchargers waste power by being belt-driven so you'll never get as much power out of it as you could with a turbo.

I just don't have the mechanical ability or the cash to install and keep a turbo setup running.

I really enjoyed your turbo build though, you did a great job.

yeah i think im just going to save money for a real sports car and just drive this thing for what it is... i think if i spent 2k on a reliable supercharger i think i would get bored with it after a week. its going to making all that noise with no pull. ill just throw in a sound system and some wheels to pass the time till i get a real sports car.

thanks guys for the reality check.
