Default Battery replacement... what do I need to know?

I have to replace my 2001 NB's battery before winter sets in... it's already having a wee bit of trouble turning over now that cool weather is here, and the battery probably has never been replaced! (I bought it used 4 years ago!)

What kind of battery do I need to get? Would any repair shop or automotive store have one available or do I need to go to a VW dealer? Would the process of replacing the battery confound the average auto mechanic who isn't familiar with a Beetle?

(I do not intend to replace it myself, I don't wanna go there.)

If a mechanic can't figure out how to remove the battery cover, you shouldnt be going to them. you dont need to go to a dealer though.

Okay, but do you have any answers for my other questions? I've never had to have the battery replaced on a car before... this is my first car and I just want to know if the average mechanic is going to know how to handle a NB (anything special about the computer?) also, what sort of battery do you recommend?

Well i checked the thread because i too have a 2.0L and i thought it might have answers for me as well. I've had the same battery 5+ years with no issues at all (knock wood), but i expect it could go soon.

I don't know, I think maybe I should just take it in to the dealer. I know it would be quite expensive, but at least I wouldn't have to worry about some mechanic unfamiliar with a NB screwing up my computer or radio...

you're past the warranty. just take it to a good shop or make a few calls. i'd even wait to see who else chimes in here.

the dealer will charge about $200. if you have any mechanical skills, you can do it yourself. here's a great how-to (link below).

Default Battery replacement

I just replaced my battery a few days ago. My advice would be to do it youself as it is not all that complex. One thing it is, though, is agravating as all get out. I replaced my original battery with a Interstate Battery and I got the highest rated one available. I'm not all that interested in going through that drill again for quite a spell.

make sure you know your radio code as well!!! I was not told that I needed that because I bought buggles second hand and did not have the owners manaual with codes, so I had to pay a dealer 40.00 to have them pull the radio out to get the code on the side of it.

I have an Interstate battery with an 84-month warranty. I had m local mechanic install it, took 20 minutes and I only had to pay for the battery, not the labor.

Just replaced the battery in the "Ruf Bug" with an Optima Group 35 Red Top 35:

Fit & terminal positioning was perfect! Not only is this battery a deeper cycling unit and much better battery than the OEM (allowing the car to sit for longer periods of time without fear of discharging), but it's also a bit smaller & lighter than the original. Never hurts to save a little space and weight.

smaller & lighter is a very good thing when it comes to a beetle battery.
