Sounds like the serpentine/acessory belt. Does it do that only when you start it up, then stop after 10-30seconds?

if it goes away just after you let the key go when it starts it is your starter

I say ride it out and just keep a little set back in case it does go out. Like I said in my other post.....Mine has been like that for years. If I'd get off my lazy a** I could just pull it and lube it up a little and that might take care of the problem.

I had the same sound. Only lasts about 1-3 seconds MAYBE after starting the car. I replaced the starter and it is still making the noise. Now I am looking at possibly the tensioner pulley or the serpentine belt. I checked the belt but it seems tight and doesn't look bad at all. Any feed back from anyone that has replaced the starter and still has this sound?

My starter is making noise but its not a squeal. How many miles are on the car? Have you replaced the timing and serpentine belts? I would lean towards a belt squeal than starter.

That squeel is "most likely" the starter bearing going bad.
I assume its worse in cold mornings. It goes away after the car has initially started. That bearing is bad, replace starter. JohnLee, I am also in Tacoma! U.P. to be exact. Shoot me a PM I can give you some good spots for work and parts. I might even be able to do it for you. |

Check your accesorie belt first....???? That would be the logical place to start would'nt it...??? Why would you think it's the starter...???? Could also be the SAI (Secondary Air Injection) This system only run's when the engines COLD and only for a few seconds.... Food for thought... Before you start replacing stuff diagnose the real problem... Instead of wasting money thoughing parts at it will not solve the problem...?????

VW dealership told me this week that in about 5 percent of cars, the timing belt will squeel before it breaks. Have you had your timing belt done lately?
If you have a squeeling timing belt, he recommended not driving it or little driving (like to be fixed) until you get it replaced. I'm new to the Beetle world and don't know alot, but figured sharing the info might help. |

Stock rating is 140 amps, I would assume your in the upper 150's and 160's. Time to replace. |
