Default Catalytic Converter...Thanks

My wife's 2000 Beetle recently developed a VERY loud exhaust rattle. I finally crawled under it last night and after a few hits with the rubber hammer found that it was coming from inside the catalytic converter. The car is >8years old and has 135000KM, so I thought we were in for a relatively expensive repair.

I usually do a search before going ahead and ordering the parts (I do most out-of-warranty work on our cars myself). I found a few threads on here that described a warranty extension on catalytic converters for some New Beetles with the 2.0l AEG. I called the stealership this morning with the VIN and they indicated coverage for the cat to 190000KM (Canada).

Thank you NewBeetle.org, you've saved me a few hundred.

Cool! Someone else got a free one! I did too, then ended up getting a second one a few months later... Had a rattle, but also 2 cells (one indicating airflow). As my car was under 8yrs/80k, I qualified.

i might be getting a second one as well since the car is still rattling.. but it would be the heatshield that is not secured properly.. we'll see

Where are you from? Your name makes me think Atlantic Canada?

I replaced my cat for $150. I went to a junkyard, bought a low-mileage stock downpipe for $100 and $50 at an exhaust shop to have them weld it in.

This is apparently illegal, etc, but the Jetta it came from had 23,000kms on it and the cat is still working great, there's nothing wrong with doing it this way at all.
