Default DAMNIT I put a HUGE crack in my windshield

I had a piece of wood in the back and I slammed on my brakes and it slid up and smacked the passenger side of the windshield and put a 1 foot by 1 foot size star crack in it. Is this fixable or do I have to buy a new windshield, if so how much do those run?

Depends on your local/state laws. Here, any crack in the area covered by the windshield wipers means the windshield must be replaced, as it is likely to start "spiderwebbing" and eventually shatter.

Any smaller cracks (usually less than the size of a $.25) can be repaired.

Your car insurance should have coverage. No?

not to rain a little more on your parade....i know cracked windshields blow chunks.

biggest windshield crack i've ever gotten repaired was about the length of a dollar bill...glass shop wasn't sure it'd work, but it did...

haven't had to buy a windshield for the bug in a while...i think the last one was around $400, my share was $250. guess i'd just shop around.

good luck!

Do a search for VW windshields. I got several different quotes with a high of $355 and a low of $250. This is for a 206 vert. I think a windshield for a tintop w/out an embeded antena will be less.
One company offered to replace the it for just the deductable minus a $50 discount for scheduling on-line.
doesn't cost anything to check.
Good luck.

When I was transporting my Remus in its loooooong box I wrapped a small blanket around it on the side of the windshield and wedged it in good on the trunk side. I have a healthy respect for the laws of Physics, or you could say I'm just chicken

My windshield had a little 'accident' last month and it involved a rubber mallet and an icepick.

To both you and OP

I got a huge chip on my windshield that became a crack, so I took it to a glass shop who said it was fixable. The windshield was in awful shape anyway so I just helped it become un-fixable and got it replaced through insurance.

Just an FYI. I manage an Auto Glass repair company. Make sure you vist safewindshields.com to learn a little about just getting your glass replace. I am huge on saftey and if you look at your beetle it is all glass. So you want to have it put in right the first time. I can't tell you how many times I have had to fix problems from antoher glass company that put in a windshield for $150 to $200. They cuts lots of steps and could cost you your life. I know that for a fact! So please just do a little reseach to get it replace. You don't go out and buy the cheapest tires or brakes for your car do you? Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I'm gonna second Huskin's comments. I went to a reputable glass shop for a replacement, they were great. The problem was the previous owner did a replacement on the cheap! When they cut the old windshield out, they scraped the sill, and it rusted. So, I ended up with almost $500.00 worth of paint and body repair, before the glass was ever replaced. Don't cut corners on this project, it is a big safety item. Beware of mobile glass replacement too, they don't have the environment to control the curing process of the glue.

Good luck,

CaL

Cool

When I've called AAA for a windshield repair, they always ask if the damaged area can be covered with a dollar bill. I would imagine that is the limit on dimension for repair. In California, the windshield must be replaced if cracks touch any two side (structural integrity of car in the event of a rollover).

Sorry about your unfortunate event. Glad it wasn't worse...
