1999 new beetle
Problem started a couple days ago. Noise was coming from area of timing belt gear cover. Was driving it to work the next day and the engine started to overheat and the noise turned into a loud whining and then the car just shutdown. I go to turn over the engine and start it and the starter spins and nothing else happens. Timing belt and serpentine is still intact. I fear that everything is mangled internally? |

I'm thinking the water pump is ceased up? ..... On a further note the coolant reservoir is empty also and there is evidence of oil and coolant from the top of the engine sprayed all over the hood. Is there any way to tell if I bent the valves without taking the engine apart? |

Check the fusebox in the engine compartment to see if something melted. It'll be hard to see if the fans are working if the car won't start, but NB's are notorious for overheating, and no coolant in the reservoir means it got really hot ...

Of course given your oil and water mix description it could be just a blown head gasket. Are the fluids evenly spread across the hood or heavy on one side and lighter as it goes across the hood? ![]() |

I did not get around to pulling off the bottom cover. This is definitely where the timing belt is 'jammed'. The fluids created an even line on the bottom of the hood right above where the timing belt is. The top gear where the timing belt goes around has no teeth missing. |

I did flip the timing belt upside down and the belt is stripped clean and the top gear is locked up I think I bent the valves also?.... |

edit since I just read your last post. If the belt is stipped clean that would be your problem. I would replace the belt and pump, and spin the crank using a wrench to see if your pistons bottom out. If that checks out perform a compression test. Your valves may be safe after all.

So was searching around on the forum and found this thread:
Help troubleshoot this engine noise... With this video. This is the same noise that started this whole mess. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUKz4DveiA0 |
