Mine does the same thing after it has rained really heavy..

Mine says it's open, and when I lock my car with my key.. it doesn't alarm. So there is some kind of sensor back there.. I think water gets into the third brake light.

And my car alarm goes off every now and then when this happens too.

I noticed mine was on yesterday morning on my way to work.. At first, I forgot about rain getting in the brake light so I pulled over and it was shut but it wouldn't open either. Now it will open but the light is still on. I hope it dries soon.. I hate having a light on.

There are black foam thingys on the hatch and the car. They are secured by little screws and when the screws get loose, the car thinks your hatch is open. This happened to me last summer on the Route 66 tour. Rain was coming down really hard and around 2am, Daisy's alarm goes off and woke up everyone. The next day another NB owner showed me how to tighten the screws. It hasn't happened since. I'm not sure if the 3rd brake light has anything to do with it.

I asked a friend of mine about this recently, because mine was doing the same thing. He said its the 3rd brake light. This is what he told me(Its from an AIM convo so sorry about the breaks):

kcfoxie: its in the latch itself
kcfoxie: two phillips screws hold the cover on the hatch itself
kcfoxie: remove those, yank the cover off
kcfoxie: and you'll see the mechanism sitting there. take a hair dryer to it first
kcfoxie: about 10 min
kcfoxie: then see what happpens.
kcfoxie: remove the third brake light and use a clear silicon sealer, like one for the bathroom, in the hole on the hatch... reseat/screw down the brake light
kcfoxie: problem should be solved and it won't leak any more then.

I haven't gotten around to doing this yet. I was at school when I asked him and couldn't do it. Its not very consistent but it still happens on occassion. But he had an '02 NB that had this problem. Apparently fixed it.

Thank you very much... I'll try doing it later. Because it's been a few days since it's rained and my light is still on and it doesn't beep when I lock it.

Everyone, check your spare tire well. If it's wet, your 3rd brake light gasket is letting water in. It shorts out the trunk latch solenoid causing the hatch light to go on, and sometimes the alarm goes off or you don't hear the arming beep.

This just started happeing to me as well and we've been absolutely dumped on in the Boston area this summer.

I've also had the alarm issue so I just stopped locking the car for now.

You can still lock your car.. I had mine unlocked and the alarm was still going crazy. But it hasn't been going off lately. AND it just downpoured yesterday so my trunk light is still on and it's still not beeping when I lock it.

The car won't beep because it thinks the trunk is open.

Hi everyone.
I and my gf have just joined the family buying a 2002 beetle.

Unfortunately we faced immediately two of the apparently most common issues for the NB: smell and water in the third brake light(both started after a heavy rain).

We still have to understand if the smell comes from the carpets in the trunk got wet, or if we need to change the air filter.

We read here the suggestion of using some sylicon to prevent the solenoid from getting wet, can someone post a picture with where exactly we should apply the sylicon?

Many thanks in advance.

There is heavy rain in St. Louis today and I am having this issue! I hope it fixes itself when the rain stops in a few days.

So the light went off and my car started "beeping" again when I remote locked it after the rain stopped. But now I have a small new problem.
Before this happened, when my car was locked and I closed the trunk it made the "beep" but now it makes the beep when I OPEN the trunk, instead of when I close it.
Has anyone had this problem? Is there anyway to fix it?

Yea that rain recently has been rough, and now we have more on the way.

Look a couple posts up and try that method, I'll be doing mine this weekend.
