Shifting problems..2001 2.0

My girlfriends 2001 2.0 check engine light came on yesterday. Its an automatic but it won't shift into gear, so I have to drive 20mph or slower. I know I need to take it in to get it scanned on the computer but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on whats wrong with it. There are no visible leaks that I can see.

I believe it is in what I have read to be as "Limp Mode"...

If anyone has the same problem..I had to replace the speed censor and it wasn't cheap. The gas mileage has improved.
