Default Cel / no cel

Just wondering how easy/hard it is to throw a CEL.

Here's The Why:
Recently bought a 2000 5 speed 2.0 NB with 74,000 miles.

1. Drove it for about a month with a loud exhaust leak and blinkin blue temp lite, till water pump gave out.(NO CEL) Had water pump/timming belt/tune up done.

2. Mechanic ripped 2 wires off the boot and shoved them back in after changin spark plugs. Drove it for about a week (jerkin around) till Neuspeed wires came in. (NO CEL)

3. While changin out spark plug wires, found a vacuum line not connected to anything. Researched on the ORG, connected it to Combi valve. Not sure how long it was not connected. (NO CEL)

4. Drove it for another 2 more months with exhaust leak, which turned out to be a blown exhaust manifold gasket. (NO CEL)

I figured any of these issues should have thrown a CEL Or not?

Got a cheap "Fleabay" interface and Vagcom 409 shareware, but couldnt connect to any controllers, so don't know if it has any codes for the above issues.

Does this sound normal? Is it possible my ECU is messed up?

YOU DROVE IT WITH A BLINKING COOLANT LIGHT???

A blinking coolant light is more like a huge "Something is wrong... fix me!" light, and may not always throw a code.

Same goes for a leaky exhaust. If you knew it was leaky why didn't you fix it? Were you waiting for a CEL?

I'm not sure why neither the plug wires nor the vacuum line threw a code...

Check if your "check engine" light on the cluster is working! May be the bulb is busted!

It takes multiple failure ( 30 to 40 times ) in a short period of time to trigger check engine light. None of the stuff from your list should trigger CHECK ENGINE (may be only misfiring caused by bad spark plug wires). What you need to do is to spend some more time with your head stuck'd in the engine bay and visually inspecting electrical connections and wires, coolant lines, vacuum lines and other stuff that might look suspicious or worn out or too dirty and rusty. If you take good care of your bug it will take a good care of you )

Good luck

My O2 sensor was on its way out for over a year. No CEL. But I did have codes stored for it...intermittent signal codes to be exact. I got a CEL when it finally died for good. Just because you don't have a CEL, doesn't mean you don't have codes indicating a problem.

Blinking blue = coolant temperature sensor. It should have blinked red when the water pump went out. Water pumps don't cause CELs. (been there, done that)

2. Mechanic ripped 2 wires off the boot and shoved them back in after changin spark plugs. Drove it for about a week (jerkin around) till Neuspeed wires came in. (NO CEL)
If jerkin around means misfiring, yes, you should have had the CEL, one code per misfiring cylinder. (been there, done that)

3. While changin out spark plug wires, found a vacuum line not connected to anything. Researched on the ORG, connected it to Combi valve. Not sure how long it was not connected. (NO CEL)
sometimes yes, sometimes no on the CEL, depends on the line. (been there, done that)

4. Drove it for another 2 more months with exhaust leak, which turned out to be a blown exhaust manifold gasket. (NO CEL) can't help you with that one. My '98 didn't play with that.
