Hi all.
I have a 2.0 beetle. Whilst driving today, the oil light came on. After reading the tech manual it states that at ignition on, without the engine running, the oil light should go out after a few seconds as this is a system check. Mine doesn't and also stays on after start up. The engine sounds and runs fine? I have noticed that everyone else, (when having an oil problem), only has problems at certain rev's and not all the time. Does this mean that I have a sensor problem ? as I have had no previous problems, and the oil level is fine Any suggestions would be appreciated ? Best regards Lee |

Have you changed the oil yet? Or have the codes scanned?

Ok then. I've figured out the problem with the oil light, so I thought I would post my finding here, just incase it may help anyone else. Please be aware though that these are my thoughts and finding, and may not be completely correct, and are for finding a faulty sensor only - NOT OIL PRESSURE ISSUES
My fault was a yellow oil light. There is an oil system check when the ignition is turned on. If all is well with the sump sensor then this light should go off after a few seconds When the engine is running if the oil light is red or flashing red then this is CAN be a sensor problem, and not an oil pressure issue. Apparently there are three sensors for oil on a beetle. One near the oil filter, one on the head, which I could not find, and one on the sump, (which apparently is to check for oil, and not for pressure). The sensor near the oil filter is easy to check. If this is the fauly one then by earthing the wire the light should go off. I presume this is the same way to check the one on the head as well. According to stuff I have read these two sensors check oil pressure at different pressures. If in my case the oil light is yellow then this suggests the sump sensor. In my case it was not the sensor but the supply to the sensor which is fuse 5, (7.5 amp), in the fuse box. Hope this will help someone out. Lee |
