I have a 1998 New beetle. I am having problems getting it to start. The car will turn over but will only run for a second before it dies. I took it to a mechanic and he ran the scanner on it and he said that what it was coming up with was that the throttle motor or actuator was bad on it. HE said that when he got it started it would run unless you tried to drive and rev the car up then it would die. So I ordered a actuator online and when it came it was a petal of some sorts, wrong part, I am stuck I do not know what part to order and the mechanic is not being much help in finding the right part because he will not be putting it on for me. He said that the part goes on the side of the throttle body and it is square kinda and has hoses coming out of it. What would this be called where can I order it? and is this even what is wrong with it.
The car ran fine untill i left somthing on and the bat died. I got it charged and every sience then i have had this problem. Last edited by hannahrae; 09-15-2008 at 03:03 PM.. |

Did the CEL come on? If so what code is the mechanic reporting?
Based on the age of your NB, and the symptoms, I'd do a quick troubleshoot on the fuel pump before spending money hunting around for a solution. Jack up the back of the car, have somebody firmly tap on the bottom of the fuel tank with a large hammer, then crank. If it fires up, then it is the fuel pump, change the fuel filter while you are at it. Good luck, CaL |

Hi there fellow 2.0 owner.
Not sure how to solve your problem but here is a LINK to the thread where you will find info on car parts, diagrams and part numbers. Before you get your self in expensive and stressful business of finding a good mechanic, I suggest you start learning more about your car. It's not hard as it looks like and with the help from other beetle owners lurking around here, you might be able to find the problem and even fix it your self in no time. First off, start with eyeballing wires and hoses under the hood. See if anything is lose or cracked or disconnected. Check fluid levels. If you have old spark plugs and spark plug wires, have them replaced with factory specification parts. Replace air filter and fuel filter. Grab that throttle body and give it a solid handshake, may be the bolts are lose, gasket is leaking, may be just need some cleaning. Save your self some bucks and do stuff yourself. It's fun, it's rewarding and it's cheaper. Good luck! TESLA |
