Well, I started my NB this morning to let it warm up and after about ten minutes I went out to go to work and discovered this...

When I went to leave for work, I noticed the engine was running ok, although there was a slight 'chirp' sound, and oil was on the ground, the dash oil warning light was not on and no smoke was coming out of the tail pipe when I turned it off.

Well preliminary inspection points at the oil cooler gasket/seal. I will not be able to get a good look at it until Friday as I am cooking Thanksgiving Dinner this year, so my schedule is full.

Do oil pans have freeze plugs? hopefully it was just a hole that turning the car on the last time opened up on ya or maybe an oil cool line got slashed and the pressure build opened it up

Sorry bout that but ide start with the plastic hoses, for me, they tend to go out often.

Gaaaa! Woulda freaked me out (again)

Way back when (ok, only about a year or so, but it seems like forever) had the oil changed in my TDI by a local chain oil/lube place that will not be named, came home, and about an hour later notice oil dripping out the oil pan. Luckily it was nowhere near a big a mess as you've got. Turned out they LOST my filler plug and replaced it with one from a frigging FORD that stripped the threads.

I hope it turns out to be a simple fix for ya.

OH man! I hope it is an easy fix! :O

I had an oil leak (not as bad as what you have) here a few months ago. The losers at the dealership didnt tighten the oil filter properly and it worked its self loose. LUCKILY ... I was at my grandparents house and noticed oil on their driveway.

Well it looks like I have narrowed it down to the oil cooler and I am somewhat relieved as I thought it was the head gasket. But the pics still show a clean head as you can see in the pics; the oil cooler on the other hand has changed colors. I'll know more this weekend when I get a chance to take it apart.

Oh My God!

I see that is not the head gasket, thank goodness, but still a big headache. And, your beautiful driveway!

At first glance, I thought it's a homicide. But then .... who would want to kill the bug?!!

May be he just didn't like the oil?

You don't have to warm a car up for more than 30 seconds, even in the winter. Anything beyond that is just wasting gas and in your case, making a complete mess of your driveway.

Yup. That is what I have read/heard too. That letting your car warm up while it sits doesnt allow the fluids to flow and warm up with the car.

I hope tho ... that you get things fixed up! Put kitty litter on your driveway too. :O If you havent already. :P

Letting your car warm up is a complete waste, but in this case it may have saved the car. Had you just jumped in and drove away who knows if you would have found the leak in time.
Good luck.

LOL No mine does not have a name, I might just take your advice and adopt that name... lets see... "Val-Dez", sort of rolls of the tongue.

NB homicide, LOL I wonder if scarabY2k (AL) would do a magazine cover for an NB homicide.

Mobil 1 0-w30; oh it cannot get enough of it. Of course after seeing it all spread out like that, I believe it is time for an oil change.

I let the car warm up for my benefit not the car's benefit per say; I like to get in and go, the last thing I want to deal with is the cold and/or frost. Nor do I want to look like those stupid people with viewing port holes; those are for boats not cars people. However it has been my experience that if something is going to happen to the car, it will usually do it in the first fifteen minutes, especially if it is cold outside and it was 26 this morning at 0600.

Yep, already done and it took the whole box to cover it. How long should I leave it on? Does anybody know?

For what its worth, only during the winter do I let it warm up and that routine unexpectedly paid off this morning; had I of been going 55 it would probably have seized up. I have also noticed that my tranny does not like to go into second when it is cold, but after it warms up all is well.

i generally let the kitty litter or dri-sweep sit for a few minutes, and then sort of ground it around with my shoes...then sweep it up into a plastic bag.

here's a good article from ehow.

http://www.ehow.com/how_113258_clean-oil-spots.html

i've used TSP and muriatic acid in the past...haven't used either in years because both are a pain to work with, and anything that drains into the ditch at the start of my driveway goes directly into wetlands...

i generally do the kitty litter thing a second time if the stain isn't gone after the first application.

Yayyy STB was right!

I had the same problem with my trans fluid line a few months ago, I just split the tube and used a 3/5 inch copler to splice the two ends together.

Oh believe me he would have noticed it, when the pressure built up in the lines, it would have sprayed oil onto the engine giving the impression you were on fire or driving through clouds there would be so much smoke
