Default "Check Engine" light

The "check engine" light on my 2002 Beetle (45K miles) comes on from time to time, usually while driving. When I turn off the engine, and turn it back on it usually goes away.

I don't want to take the car to the dealership, I've lost total trust in them.

I'm hoping I can fix it cheap, or find someone who can.

I live in Palm Beach county, Florida.

Any advice or suggested mechanics would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Default check engine light

I would get the code read.
Mine first came on when the CAT was bad. Code 0420
Then it came on again & this time it's the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I haven't gotten it fixed yet. I'm gonna' try cleaning it.

Go to any AutoZone. If it's on they can read it & tell you what codes are on there. Then come back here with the codes & we'll be able to help more. It's a free thing at AutoZone & about $100 at a dealer. Granted they have a vag-com but the OBD works too

My mother sometimes has this problem with her Jetta. I think it's a weird glitch with the gas cap. Make sure you give that thing a few extra clicks when you're putting in on. Kinda odd, but it works for her.

I just bought a '98 beetle and am going through this. What I have learned is that the owner's manual indicates the check engine light generally shows up some sort of emissions problem.

Mine turned out to be something bad in either the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and/or ignition coil. I'm replacing all of it, just to be on the safe side.

I just took mine in to have the check engine light fixed a week ago. Mine would come on for sometimes days or weeks at a time, then turn off. I noticed nothing wrong with how it was running. Since I'm still under warranty, I took it to the dealership and was told that it was the temperature sensor getting screwy. It's possible you could just have a malfunctioned sensor of some sort if the light is turning on/off like that.
