Default Please help VAG 17560 NB 2.0 P codes too

I had a great Texer come over the house and scan my Beetle. VCDS said 17560. I have cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner and looked for vacuum leaks but can't find anything amiss.
This started out as an intermittent CEL but turned into being on all the time. I just took a 3000 mile trip and noticed power surging as if i was stepping harder on the pedal while at highway speeds then later high revs 2000+ when at idle but only on a few occasions. It is also idling very rough at times where the car shakes to the point of dying but doesn't. I never know what is going to happen when I go somewhere.

Today it almost died. Rough Idle at around 500 rpm. The car been driven about a mile before this. I turned the car off, then back on, things got back to normal with a bit of sluggishness on acceleration.

Out of desperation the other day I went to Autozone for a scan. Several P codes were pulled:

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)
P1296 Cooling system malfunction
P0102 mass or volume air flow circ low input
P0172 fuel trim, bank 1 system too rich

Does this help any for diagnosis ?

thanks in advance.

P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)

That was one of my '98s favorites, a new fuel filter solved the problem.

I would also look at the coil pack and see if there are any cracks in it. If there are, and it has been damp in your area (rain, snow, etc.) that can cause the shuddering/almost stalling. Been there, done that too.

this site has become my friend as far as the CEL goes... just type your P-codes into the search box and it will list (for most codes) symptoms, causes, solutions, and any other related side notes!

Code P0420 Catalitic Converter not working right?

I had to replace mine after same code reading, would not pass smog tests. Converter had actually been ruptured from going over something?
New one ran about $150.00 installed at a muffler shop.

Default CEL and shuddering

I just experinced the shuddering problem today, taking it to the Autozone guy tomorrow. Hope it does not tax me wallet too much. The shop is about 2 miles from my place, I am wondering if I can drive it over??

My friend came over with VCDS again and this is what came up:

I cleaned the throttle body- it wasn't very dirty but I did manage to get it pretty shiny. I had my friend come by again to clear codes and run diagnostics while driving. codes came up in this order:

16891 idle control higher than expected. This popped up shortly after hitting the road. the car hit 2000 rpm at the first stop sign. the car was already warm from idling in the driveway for 20 min.

17560- bank 1 , long term fuel trim, range 2 leaness lower limit exceeded

17550- load calculation cross check lower limit exceeded.

16804- catalyst system bank 1 below threshold

while idling the timing seemed to fluctuate around 24 - 30 degrees BTC is that normal?
group 6 showed lambda(4) -6.3
gp 10 #2 load at 23, 40, 33 and #3 load at 9.8, 16, 13
gp 46 cat B1 NOT OK
gp 77 #2 8.69, 13.42, 18.03, 19.94, 26.67 while #3 was stuck at 6.67

during driving we checked the maf in group 34? I was not working the computer but to my friend it seemed to respond ok. He was monitoring 3 groups at the same time and all seemed to correspond with each other equally while I accelerated and slowed.

readiness was 0000 1101

Today I changed the temp sensor but didnt notice much difference in driving. Today all I have seen is the high idle at 1800rpms both before and after the sensor replace. I picked up a fuel filter but am in doubt whether it is needed and might just take it back if any of this new info can help.

Thanks

how is the battery? you would be amazed how much head ach my bat battery caused me. car started well unless it was cold but idle was all over i was getting MAF codes i was getting throttle body codes and a whole mess of stuff.

how many miles on the car? if it is under 120 then VW should replacee the cat with that below thresh hold code in there assuming you still have your stock cat.

Thumbs down

I've been suspect of the battery because it does dip down to 11.6 volts after what should have been from a full charge- (long drive before parking). With VCDS I was showing 13.7 volts while running so I ruled it out. I wonder if I should try a battery test at autozone???
I am at 125,000 miles so out of the recall period. Things seem to have settled down a bit with the new coolant sensor. I am still getting surges while on the highway and once and a while high revs when idling but no knocking(idle at 400rpm) or stalling. The problems above have been very isolated and infrequent.
It's starting to bum me out, I am almost tot the point of putting it into the shop so they can guess what is wrong.

Battery was great. 13.7v, 13.0v 680a after load was applied. I am going to install a new fuel filter now.
Still scratching my head!
