Default Camshaft sensor location on 99 beetle 2.0L

Hello all, I coming here in need of some help. My wife's beloved beetle has been giving us minor issues over the last 6 months and the latest issue is Code P0341(Camshaft) being the likely cause and the first thing I'll check.

About one month ago I changed the ignition wires and a few months prior to that the plugs. So I'll rule this out, but not completely. If it helps, the car is putting out a different smell right now. Cel came on from a trip to the grocery store and is running rough, jerky according to the wife. She also says 40mph is the top speed in which she could reach.

I'm looking for the location of the CamShaft sensor. Or should I look elsewhere first?

Thanks

the ignition coil could be cracked. very common on these bugs. it causes misfires and very rough running condition could also cause strange smells.
i would spray the coil down with water and see what happens.
best of luck

If you have the valvecover off of the engine, and you're looking down at the cam from the top, the cam position sensor should be right to your left. It sits right below the cam but there is also a piece of metal that sticks out off of the head. This should make it very east to find, it simply bolts onto the side of the head below the camshaft.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I had to take it to a local trusted shop last week because I simply don't have the time to trouble shoot the car. It is my wifes daily driver and we can't be with out a car for more then a few days.

What they found was that there is a crack in the exhaust manifold. Which is very rare! I asked them to save the part because I've never seen a cracked EM. I understand that a crack in the manifold would likely cause the systems. But would it throw the code? I'm afraid I'll have to shell out $200 for them to replace the sensor.

I asked this same question on another forum and was told that a crack in the manifold or downpipe would not be the cause of the code. And when I pick the car up and the cel is till on after the manifold was replaced, I shouldn't have to pay for the part or labor.

The mech told my wife he was certain the manifold was the problem, but not 100% sure. They ordered the part last Wednesday(2day delivery) and i'm still waiting for a phone call. They've had the car for 1 week now.
