You really should get a battery charger on there and charge it properly. The alternator is designed to maintain the battery, not charge it from dead. Most likely you will be OK, but keep it in mind for the future - it's a common way to overheat and kill your alternator. Of course, when you are stuck somewhere, you do what you can.
If the battery voltage is real low you will get all sorts of warning lights.
