It was pretty darned easy too. I did notice some things though.

I don't think the filter had EVER been changed. It was pretty well stuck.

When I removed the filter cover I was starting to wonder if there was some kind of sound proofing material in the dash as I came across this:

Then I looked at the cover and the fiberous liner appears to have self destructed over the years. The entire mid section was empty:

I did finally manage to pull a majority of the fiber (and what appeared to be red & purple tassles) out of the dash area. I know I should have vacummed it out but I was running out of daylight.

This is the pile of crud I pulled out of the dash/filter area. Pretty darn nasty if you ask me:

I may end up going to VW to order a new filter cover or make a replacement pad out of foam or something.

I had the dealer change mine last Fall when I bought Ernie. It was so nasty, the guy brought it out to the lobby to show it to me!!!

Yup, that definitely looks like a mouse nest. I had a TON of them in my 68 when I tore out the interior.

Eep! Thank goodness all I had to deal with in changing mine were old leaves and dead flies!

Yeah that looks like a mouse nest!

I changed my filter out last summer. Took about 30 minutes. Not really difficult, just a pain dealing with getting all the dash pieces off safely. Wasn't too icky. But I also had my regular air filter changed, when I had my timing belt and water pump done. Went to pick my car up and the mechanic said my air filter came out in pieces because it was so old and gross. I wouldn't be shocked if it had never been replaced before.

Are the factory elements activated charcoal? I just replaced the '02's filter with a new Wix but it looks different.

FWIW, I changed an '02 RSX filter that same day. Much easier; no tools required.

absolutely a rodents nest. probably just a mouse though. nothing to worry about, but it is kinda nasty. i lost my critter on the way to work one day. Stopped at a red light and there he was, right in the windsheild well by the wipers. When i got to my office he escaped and i saw it run off. My vents didn't stink so much after that.
